Write Now

a workshop reading of a new musical by

Alan Cancelino & Jenne Wason

Directed by Mary Arnault
Dramaturge: Gary Garrison

Jules, an ambitious lyricist, is frustrated that her composer Colin doesn’t get his writing done. When he messes up their big shot at Broadway, Jules conspires with Zetta, a mysterious stranger who hypnotizes Colin to be more focused. It works - temporarily - but soon Zetta uses her bizarre powers to take more and more control over the creative team (due to nefarious reasons of her own). Shit gets real. Jules needs to figure out how to solve all the shit, save the show, and save her friends.

About the Workshop…

The O’Neill Festival of New Works offers a rare opportunity for dramatists to work with dramaturges in preparation for each festival’s staged readings. In this case the dramaturge is Gary Garrison. From 2007-2017, Gary was the Executive Director of the Dramatists Guild of America – the national organization of playwrights, lyricists and composers headed by our nation’s most honored dramatists. Up to the spring of 2020, he was also the Director of the Dramatists Guild Institute – a premier educational institution dedicated to the continued education of dramatists throughout the country.  Prior to his work at the Guild, Garrison filled the posts of Associate Chair, Artistic Director and Master Teacher of Playwriting in the Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where he produced over forty-five different festivals of new work, collaborating with hundreds of playwrights, directors and actors..

Playwright’s Goals for the Workshop…

From Alan and Jenne:

The idea for Write Now came from an offhand comment Alan made years ago that he wished he could be hypnotized to get more work done. The idea stuck with me, but of course I had to take the idea to the extreme. Since this is a wholly original musical based only on a comment, we’re hoping to use this workshop to see how the plot is shaping up, how the audience is enjoying the world and the characters who live in it, and how the music is feeding the story and amplifying its world.

We’re pretty early on in the writing process so this workshop will be a very behind-the-scenes look at the collaborative process of writing a musical. Some songs are still just sketches, some scenes may get scrapped.  All to say, we’re hoping for AS MUCH AUDIENCE FEEDBACK AS POSSIBLE to help get us ready for the next draft of the show. And we promise not to brainwash you into only saying nice things.
