Dreamsville

a reading of a play by

Susan Lumenello

Directed by Frank Vasello
Dramaturge: Dan Lombardo

Real-life Gloria Stavers, former model and “party girl,” makes the unlikely climb from clerk to boss, turning 16 magazine into a teen idol bible and nurturing young America’s fantasy life. While “her girls” drink in the intimate details of their fave raves—from Elvis to The Monkees—Gloria falls for a star, just like a reader. Dreamsville traces the pop music explosion through the life of one of its unheralded pioneers.

About the Workshop…

The O’Neill Festival of New Works offers a rare opportunity for dramatists to work with dramaturges in preparation for each festival’s staged readings. In this case the dramaturge is Dan Lombardo. Dan has worked on over 100 productions at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater,  as dramaturg, as a director, as director of the WHAT Lab, and finally as the Artistic Director for the company.

Playwright’s Goals for the Workshop…

From Susan Lumenello:

Once the play is embodied by an actor, then it becomes the living thing it is meant to be. So, I am eager to see how the actor works with the material and what sort of ideas and approaches she brings to the work. I want to find out what else the play might need to tell its story – if there’s too much of one thing or not enough of another. And I want the audience to laugh and be sparked by and wonder about Gloria’s life, how she changed pop culture, and the role fantasy plays in that culture.
